Energy of the Earth
Marketing Oil & Gas
As Belize’s premier energy company, BNE leads the way in the responsible exploration, production and marketing of oil and gas in Belize. BNE is a fully integrated energy company and its operations span the full range of oil and gas activities: from drilling and geology to gas processing and branding.
In 2005, Belize Natural Energy discovered oil in commercial quantities at Spanish Lookout on its first exploration well, Mike Usher #1 (MU1) and in 2007 a second discovery was made at Never Delay.
BNE remains committed to the efficient management and production of these fields through the use of the latest in seismic exploration technology and drilling methods.
Belize Natural Energy sells Belize Light Crude (BLC) both locally and internationally.
BLC and ND Crude are transported using a Belizean fleet of tanker trucks from the Central Gathering Facility at Iguana Creek to the port in Big Creek for shipment abroad. Today BNE operates the most modern hydrocarbon logistics system in Belize and the region. BNE Tanker trucks are tracked via satellite from Iguana Creek all the way to Big Creek. If a unit stops, turns off the allowed route or exceeds the allowed 45 miles per hour, operators are immediately informed.
From BNE’s state-of-the-art control room, technicians monitor the fleet from the time they leave the Central Gathering Facility at Iguana Creek to when they arrive at the Storage and Export Facility at Big Creek. Control room technicians can pinpoint the location of each tanker on the route as well as the speed at which the tanker is traveling. Automatic alerts are issued to the control room if a tanker goes over the speed limit or does not arrive at the port within a certain timeframe.
This technology is uniquely designed for oil and gas logistics systems and is currently the only system of its kind in Belize.
The quality of crude oil produced from the Never Delay Field differs from the quality of crude oil produced from the Spanish Lookout Field (see diagram).
Belize Natural Energy has shipped oil to customers in Costa Rica, Panama and the US Gulf Coast.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas
In 2007 BNE started the implementation of a gas processing plant with the objective of reducing flaring by processing associated gas into usable products that benefit the company and the people of Belize. By 2009, this objective had been achieved.
BNE produces LPG that exceeds the local standard for safety, handling and storage. Safety in handling and a higher energy value per dollar immediately created a preferred product for Belizeans. Market penetration by BNE’s LPG is only limited by the available petroleum resources of the Spanish Lookout Field.
BNE augmented its LPG operations by blending its production with imported LPG from Mexico. Following on BNE’s domestic success in the LPG market and its unshakable commitment to do business the right way, the Government of Belize, BNE and others, are currently developing a project for a stable and sustainable supply of LPG for Belize. When completed the project will be a testament to modernity, safety and progress in Belize.
Internal Power Production
The operation of the gas processing plant enabled BNE to process fuel gas for power generation. As of 2010 BNE’s gas turbine has reduced the company’s dependency on diesel generators and more importantly provided key insights into the generation of lower cost electricity using natural gas while reducing its carbon footprint.
